Scoring: MP

p - 1-1-dbl
2-3-p- 3
p - 3NT

At unfavorable vulnerability is this hand inappropriate for a negative double?

Is a WJS appropriate if that exists?

If it is acceptable for a negative double then:

What is the minimum that pard shows for the 3 bid?

What does he need to convert to 3NT?

Is it better to prefer back to 3 after the 3 bid?

Should you return to 4 after the 3 NT?

You were lucky it didn't come back to you in 3/4...

Anyway, over 3NT I pull out to 4. Over 3 I'd bid 3 as you did. At 1st round I'd stretch and bid 2.

I think WJS is better here. After 1S, 3H is better than dbl then 3H, which should show more than a direct 3H bid. HOwever, this hand is probably not quite worth 3H at unfavorable vul. Change CQ to HQ would be a standard 3H bid.

1. I would like 3 as a wjs and it should be a wjs from a unpassed partner. (What else? Fitjump without agreement? Splinter...no way..)

2. In my opinion, it was not acceptable to double.
And I don´t think, that 3 Club shows much extras, my take out double told him that I have a fit somewhere or a long Heart suit, which I was not able to bid.

3. He needs a 3154 hand or so, including a double stop in spades.

4. If I decided to double and bid hearts later, I should stay fixed. Pd will play me for a very different hand after a X and a 3 Diamond bid.

5. I would bid 4 HEart.

6. I would strongly try to confess my pd from wjs and nfb. One of these tools had solve my problems at once.
Kind Regards

Roland

Hi,

if you can show the hand with weak
hearts direct, that is of course better.

The 3H bid over 3C is clear, afterall that
was your plan as you made the neg. X.

What does partner need to convert 3H to 3NT?
Let me ask you, did he understand the 3H bid?
If yes, he will have at least 2 hearts, since other
wise, he knows, that he has no chance reaching
dummy.
Over 3NT I would bid 4H.

With kind regards

I would bid 3 which should show something like this. I would like a better suit at this vulnerability but the alternative (like the auction you actually got) is worse. If 3 is not available, a negative double is mandatory.

I know an expert who says partner's 3 is forcing. (He plays good-bad 2NT here). I'm not so sure if that's standard. But it does show extras.

Anyway, you auction is ok and I would pull 3NT to 4 although passing 3NT is certainly an option.

This was pard's hand. We agreed afterward that since we had 3H available as a WJS that it was more appropriate than the negative dbl and bid to show 8-9 hcp as opposed to 6+ H and 0-7 hcp for the WJS.

Both 4H and 3NT were down 2.

Perfect for a 0-6 NFB, I believe.

ie 2H as the Negative Free Bid? I have never played them and I understand that their limitations outweigh their usefulness (altho perhaps not here...;-)

I don't play NFB and would have passed the first time around. Then if it is convenient to compete again later, partner will not take me for a hand which I do not possess. Yes we may occasionally get shut out or stolen from, but then we avoid either having too wide a range for our bids or the ugliness of the NFB double.

It is commonly accepted that 2H is forcing showing 10+; whereas, dbl and bidding hearts shows less than 10. A good 6 to 9 or so.

NFB switches those two auctions. Most play NFB is constructive, showing about 6-11.

I prefer other conventions instead of WJS.
