this is a PENALTY!!! Pass and Nord have to Pass in 99% in the cases. Why nobody discuss the problem. Nord said -partner your suit?
And in the worst case we bid our 3 card suit. Somebody will say-that never happens(penalty pass), yes it's rare, BUT!! very functional-if they say somethig else -OK we are Pass next. If they Pass 1♣/♦ redoubled just made is just 230 !!!
So, if there are some answers I'l find a good examples of the case (from the real life I hope )
And somethig other, is somebody interested of OPEN individual tournaments for good stakes 100$+ like a backgammon tournaments? All playng the same system, no alerts, barometer ?

I have discussed this situation with several partners. We do NOT play this as penalty but rather as "you pick". We think that this advantage outweighs the disadvantage of not having the penalty pass available.

is penalty in some schools. For instance, the french one.

In the US it's a "pass the ball" bid. Most bidders here are from the US, so that's why it's not discussed much

Pass by doubler's partner was the easiest way to say "Partner, I have crap in my hand, pick your best suit so you'll be declarer"

standard is "you pick". I've never heard about pairs playing this as penalty.

I have not seen pass after opponent's XX as being played for penalty. In my experience the typical interpretation in ACBL-land would be a lack of preference. A second consideration of this situation is the need for a way to expose psychic XX's. We do that with an initial pass and then a free bid:

(1m)-X-(XX)-P; (P)-1M-(P)-any

which is natural and shows good values. (If you live in a psyche-free world, this is not needed.)

Yes, there are pairs who use pass here to say "I want to defend this contract".

Mikeh treats the pass of XX this way, I think. See the thread here. I play it this way also in my established partnerships.

However, it is not the norm.

A second consideration of this situation is the need for a way to expose psychic XX's. We do that with an initial pass and then a free bid .
That can be a part of the system -good hand with any distribution OR
bad hand with any distribution JUST! because we know that after our redouble
they will say something else but Pass. I have a convention allready -our partner Passes and if we Pass too -the mission is completed-bad hand.

if there is not for penalty our partner says 1♦ -doubled and we?? 1♥ wich will be doubled later. OK if we don't have penalty PASS we could say 1♥ immediately, and that sounds more decisively than PASS first-sometimes they will not Double us. But if we Pass and next say 1♥ after another penalty Double
they will Double by habit.1♣ redoubled just made -230, and 1♥ doubled against the best defence is .... -3, -4 who cares .Yes, they say that never happens to me -I think it's easy to remember our triumphs , and to forget the crashes. Thanks for the replyes!!

When the hand for it comes up, pass for penalty certainly will gain. It's just a question of how often a hand like this occurs, vs. how much you lose in extra undertricks by getting to 3-3 & 4-3 fits when better fits are available, which may lead to being taken off the hook by the opponents. The latter are much more common in my experience.

East leaved W to pick a suit, now she have to lead ,I would lead in ♠-my partner don't have a preferance, and I had ''the chance to pick the best suit'' .So it's best to lead there-anyway she can not blame me for that. But if I pick ♥ lead and give them some overtrick she will be not so kind. And if I hear 1♥ after N's redouble there are no lead problems. Yes they can Double us-but we can escape -2 for -500 with a good play(anyway it's not so easy to double without honours), and it's better than -600 or -630.
