I'd pass, but I would think about 3. Contextually, this seems to show diamonds and a major. Otherwise, why bid at this level and not open 1 or 2 initially?

If you do anything other than pass at your first turn you are sick, and balancing would then be clear.

Most people (I assume) would not preempt this hand. Balancing is clear though.

Perhaps you would balance with a X, but that risks playing a 4-3 major fit when you have some 9 or 10 card diamond fit.

Everything is not always so black and white.

At the table, I went with pass, although I thought about it for a long time. Any other colors it seems like passing is completely clear to me. I wasn't really considering double - if I had bid it would have been 3D. As it turns out, double is the winner here - pard has a strong NT and would have passed your X for a sure 300 and probable 500, depending on your defense. If you bid 3D he's going to bid 3NT, which is touch and go - probably makes on normal (bad) defense. We beat 3D 2 tricks for +100 (I threw a trick), which was still about a 30% board - some tables were going minus in 3NT I presume.

If partner has a strong NT hand, why did he not bid 3NT over 3C?

Partner passes his 10-14 in direct seat, hand leaving to me to reopen my 9-11 passed hand. That's what I have!
Now 3C preempt hoped to shut us out or dare us to get into trouble --are we shut out? Trouble in 3H?
I bid 3D to warn partner not to bid 3H wothout BOTH majors ok= 4-3+. So I correct 3H to 3S and we've come in not TOO likely for a big set.
