RHO opens 1.

The form of scoring is deliberately left off. If your answer is different at IMP (teams), MP (pairs), or BAM please qualify it.

You might give the vulnerability, however.

And dealer perhaps :)

5C NV against V
4C love all

I quite fancy 2C at game all but don't mind 4.
2C at red, but also don't mind 4.

I find that bidding 4 is surprisingly effective, especially on hands with a bit of defense (like this one). Bidding 5 is usually pretty easy to double, and usually goes off (often opposite no game). The 4 bid is much harder to penalize when it is down one or two, and people often strain to compete over it and end up going down in a hopeless game.

Hi,

I preempt, scoring does not matter,
but vulnerability.

With kind regards

4 or 5 depending on vulnerability.

By the way, I have a running discussion with Chris Larsen about these kinds of hands and moving past 3N. In the USBF yesterday he frowned when Brad and Fred had the following auction on these two hands:

Scoring: IMP

Brad opened 1 and his LHO overcalled 2. Fred made a neg x and Brad jumped to 4.

They ended up in 5, but the defense had an accident and didn't cash the A. The other table made 13 tricks in NT on a low spade lead (actually being pushed to 4N).

Chris was critical of 4 since it bypasses 3N, which is the only makable game (Fred's LHO had Ax). Frankly, I thought it was dubious for Brad to pass 3N even if he chose to rebid 3 only clubs.

I gave the dealer. I left the vulnerability off purposefully too.

I would probably bid 4 in all circumstances.
