Agree with 1♦ overcall?
4♦ is a weak preemptive bid
Do you go on to 5♦? Or any other bids? Or Pass ;)

This is a toughie.

My general thought is that a 1NT overcall sets the important facts first -- general shape and strength.

If, however, you will bid 2♦ with any weak(ish) hand and reserve the extremely anti-preemptive 1♦ (at least at IMP scoring) for a sound overcall (would definitely open this), then OK.

As to after 4♦. Sure, I want a stiff club and the diamond King, and that's all. But, will he have that? No reason to believe that strongly, IMO. I wish I knew, but that's the downside of preempts -- can hurt us too.

5 Diamond? Why not a slam try?

If pd has a preempt, I will fail in 4 Diamonds, so why should I bid more?
And I agree with 1 Diamond. Why should I make the small lie of 1 NT when I have a natural call avaiable?

Agree with 1♦ and pass now.

How many tricks we make in diamonds depends on how many clubs partner has. We have no reason to assume club shortage.
That's impossible. No one can give more than one hundred percent. By definition that is the most anyone can give.

I think there is some evidence from the auction that partner is short in clubs rather than majors.

Anyway that may just leave us with a second heart loser to worry about, so pass remains the sensible choice.

My regular partner bid 3NT over my preemptive 3♦ raise in an ACBL matchpoint game on BBO last night. He achieved -150 for a round score.

Pass.

#1 1D is ok, the alternative being pass or
if you are brave / foolish enough overcall
1NT, I wont pass and I wont overcall 1NT.

#2 pass, wrong shape, wrong honors.

  • Agree 1♦ = 10, _X =3, 1N = 2.
  • Now, _P = 10, 5♦ = 8.
LHO announced the majors but RHO was not enthused, so I agree with Halo that partner may be short in ♣. Hence the decision may be closer than most think. I wrote the above before simpleboi's revelation of partner's hand :) Did you run ♦Q to make 11 tricks?

Yup, I actually ran the ♦Q..

However, even with a trump loser, its still possible to use the 5th ♠ for the 11th trick.. and still the possibility of ♥A onside..

So seems like a game that should be in for IMPs
