If you redouble there is a chance (perhaps small) that they will find a "winning" save in 5 or 6 (winning here is defined as -800 or less).

Not sure what your question is. 1H followed by 2D is too timid I think.
Please note: I am interested in boring, bog standard, 2/1.

Lucky not to play in 1H. Why didn't South start with 2NT or even 4NT? I don't like 1S on the North hand at all, but it certainly worked out well!

Discussed so many times. Funnily enough I was in the camp that said it showed 4 until I was convinced by several others that it should show 5. Hardly automatic!

I bet I wasn't one of those several others. I refuse to bid a wereaglean 1NT here so I think 1S is automatic. For you it may not be.

I would have bid 2nt(unusual for 2 lower unbid) and then over partner's 3d bid 5d giving up on slam. I would be too chicken to try a club cuebid which just may lead to confusion.

I don't have a problem with 1. In fact I view that whether 1 shows 4+ for you or 5+ for you is a p'ship agreement. And that even if it shows 5+ or that partner will play you for 5+, that it may still be right on the hand. However, I think "automatic" is an overbid. You have clarified, however, that it's automatic for you in your partnerships. It's all an aside (that you started :P ) from the initial problem of the 1 and 2 bids.

Edit: Ok. I guess I started it by mentioning 1. :)

two words for south: 4 N

Fine with 1S. I'm not passing 1H.

Not fine with 2D; I think 3D is clear. Yes it's forcing :)

I would have passed one heart but I guess we are told that is very wrong.
Granted I would never, never play partner for this hand though.

I could understand 2h here, I understand pass, I understand one spade,

if one spade is 100 % wow

With wide range overcalls, advancing is automatic for me on this hand.

I'd never raise with Jx support. Since we almost always overcall 1 with 4-5 in the majors, we need to bid spades here with four of them, to be able to find the 4-4 fit. You might chose to have suit quality requirements for bidding 1 on four, but I can in fact make the bid on four small (seldom occuring though).
Kind regards,
Harald

I agree with 1.

I am not convinced that 3 is forcing. Well at least not for everyone. I think it would depend on exactly how strong your simple overcalls can be.

I would have thought that in a standard limited overcall style that a jump just shows a maximum overcall.

What are the arguments for this showing five.

One of the biggest problems with simple overcalls is finding a 4=4 fit in a second suit. This is easily overcome when partner bids a four-card suit especially at the one-level.

I mean after a 1 overcall how else are we going to find a 4=4 spade fit if responder does not bid them. Of course I know that sometimes opener will be strong enough to "reverse" into spades after some other response.

If 1 is at least 'constructive' (many play it as forcing), then why wouldn't you want 3 to be forcing if it shows a max overcall? I think most cap a max overcall at roughly a 17 (+ or -).

While this hand is a lot less than that, the playing strength argues for some strong action.
