Aight, gonna make this an actual problem hand since the Epeen contest that prompted this thread has subsided. The original hand is still down there in invisible ink somewhere but here's a problem hand (the first 6 comments below refer to the original hand.)

Favorable IMPs You dealt

AKJ - AQ63 KQ9542

1 - P - 1 - 1N (15-17)
X - 2 - P - P
3 - P - 3 - P
- ?

Do you like your bidding so far and what do you do now?

Am I missing something? Pass looks normal? If partner could make 4 without your help, surely he'd have bid something other than 1, such as X or 5.

This is a vanity thread. You're not missing something. If you think the answer is obvious, I do too. If you think vanity threads suck, sorry. This is my first and hopefully my last here.

I don't understand why the top hand didn't bid 4 over 2.

I would have bid 3H instead of doubling 1NT. It seems important to show my hand before it is too late to do so. A direct 4H would be exclusion but I won't use it.
Please note: I am interested in boring, bog standard, 2/1.

I think its very unusual to draft a vanity poll and a few days later completely change the original post. Did an admin restrict your amount of new posts?

On the new hand I bid 4, but this just postpones a guess. To make slam I'll need some sort of JT / KT9 and I have no real way to determine if pard has this. I think its fantasy to hope for the A in pard's hand, but he might have a club void and some diamond length.
