Nothing unusual about this auction. Responder has a lot of red cards, and opener took his preference. I would be surprised if responder had any spades (sounds like he has -1 spade).

Doesn't anyone mean diamonds when they bid diamonds and hearts when they bid hearts any more? Geez!
