One of my all-time favorite uses of music to propel a movie was Roy Orbisun's "In Dreams" as used in the dark drama "Blue Velvet".

Any other favorites out there? Can you find a clip to share?

"American Beauty" and the way it used "Because" by the Beatles - the lyrics seemed to sum up the message of the movie and then the music's abrupt end fits so well with the movie ending.

J.S. Bach - Matthäus Passion performed by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra as the opening/closing theme on M. Scoreses "Casino" as a bizarre background for showing "Cathedrals of Luck" in LV.

The introduction of "Fanny and Alexander" by Ingmar Bergmann. The music is the slow movement of a Schumann piano quartet.

Not a film, but I was surprised to hear Schubert's Ave Maria being used in the PC game Hitman: Blood Money. (I haven't watched the movie, but i think it was used in the Hitman movie as well.)

Phil Collins and much more in "American psycho"
From Psych "I mean, Gus and I never see eye-to-eye on work stuff.
For instance, he doesn't like being used as a human shield when we're being shot at.
I happen to think it's a very noble way to meet one's maker, especially for a guy like him.
Bottom line is we never let that difference of opinion interfere with anything."

I think advertisement can certainly be considered in the category of short film.
