Double from E showed 1-suited hand.
Edit:2 - transfer

What should double from S mean and what options has N now?

The options offered seem thin, I would expect dble to be a game try in S.

Thanks for reply, the main point in the poll for me was whether that double is for penalty or not (as it was passed at the table :( ) - that's why options are so limited.

You could just make a poll:
a)penalty
b)not penalty (t/o, points)

That way you wuold convey what you meant :)

Anyway, modern style is "points" and lack of better bid (so probably not 6hearts nor good stopper with game going values)

The poll mentioned opener's club holding, but strangely did not mention opener's spade holding.

As with many problems, what is the context? Would opener have already bounced with any four-card spade hand? Max with 3? Would M+1 have already shown a max with four?

2 was a transfer, right?

I voted "always pass" but would have preferred somewhere in between the first two options. Depending on what NT structure we play (Smolen? some way of showing an invitational 5-5 majors directly?), we probably don't need 3 as a natural bid, so that could be a generic game try. Therefore double is not a game try but somewhat penalty-oriented. I would expect opener usually to pass with a doubleton spades and sometimes with three spades, depending on club holding and spade quality.

But yeah, if I held a 5341 7-count I might claim that double shows just that :)

I play this double is "I know it's wrong to defend 3C undoubled, but I don't know what to bid, and I'm at least ok with defending 3Cx", you just judge what to do based on your defensive holdings and how many spades you have.

(I assumed 2H was a transfer.)

Not penalty. You would double on hands that were going to transfer and invite. You would double on hands that were going to transfer and bid 3N but have no stopper.

Not penalty. As opener I expect a 5-3-3-2 shape and make my decision based on that.
Please note: I am interested in boring, bog standard, 2/1.
