Ops are playing Acol and competent players. All red, teams. Regular partner but she has a tendency to get gadgets confused, especially towards the end of the evening. You pick up:

AKQ10542
Q
Jx
KJx

LHO starts bidding:

(1C) - P - (1S) - ?

The 1C bid shows a minimum 12 HCP and at least 4 clubs and it is probably a good suit, which makes your clubs look a bit weaker. It also probably, but not necessarily, denies a 5-card major. 1S promises at least 4 spades and if it is 4 spades it denies 4 hearts.

If you bid 2S partner may take you for something else, she has form, and is likely to start bidding Hearts like they are going out of fashion. 3S in this situation hasn't been discussed and you've no idea what partner will do? A double shows the other two suits.

You pass the bidding continues:

(2H)-P -(P)- ?

Same problem, what does p do over 2S?

What I'm interested in is the thought process for analysing this at teams and MP.

At teams I assume my opposite number had the same problem as our team mates are also playing Acol so my only concern is if there is game in Spades and I very much doubted it.

In MPs, on reflection, I think I would have bid 3 spades and trusted partner on the assumption that most of the field would be in spades but I'm still not convinced that it is worth a 4 spades given opps bidding.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Simon

2S now should be a real suit (5+), exposing a possible psyche, p can decide to go for
I would see thhis as a bit weak for 3S, as the Q is worthless, the honors dubious

in pairs a clear cut 2S, as even -1 may be good
in teams it's a gamble, I do not see chances for game but a part score swing hurts too, 2S without enthusiasm

7 of ur HCP are of dubious value (, , ), and if RHO has a real 1 bid there is not much left for pard...

2 at MP
2 at IMP, but I am not too optimistic, and -2 possible

In case that RHO should have psyched then pard should know realize this after ur nat 2 and act accordingly

3 risks too much

They don't sound that competent, passing a reverse.

I've noticed that some of the older Acol players just bid up the line, they don't do reverses. I tried to explain the concept to one player I was partnering but it just didn't work.

2S over 1S is natural.

The reason is not, to expose a psych, most likely I live a sheltered live, since
I dont encounter psychs to often, I do, but its rare.
The reason is, you dont need 2S for showing a 2-suiter, you have X and 2NT for that,
so bidding 2C and 2S in this situation is kept as natural.

This is espesially important, if 1S could be bid on 2345, there was a time suit quality
played a role in deciding to bid a suit, but those times are gone.

Undiscussed - your best bet is pass and passing throughout.

Maybe after 2H, you can bid 2S, followed by 3S.

In the end you pay off, since you dont have the right agreement set, that is ok, discuss
it with p, if you think it is important, and you plan to improve with this particular
p, or leave it at it.

And the field may face the same situation, and may also not have discussed this.

With kind regards
Marlowe

I'll bid 3 since partner's a passed hand. I seriously doubt RHO can muster a double on Jxxx and if they bid hearts partner is likely to be long there.
