I saw this on some vugraph

It proved to have no chance as East as has 5 spades and nearly all the remaining HCP (only 2 hearts) but still its
a poor contract to end in with that bidding. 4 while marginal at least has some chance so North has say he has/imply that he has 6 hearts at some point.

Sure north might bid 3h rather than 3s but also east might overcall one spade with 5spades and nearly 16 hcp as you say.

I would expect a lot of people to get to game if east was really silent with all of that.

Bidding seems fine to me. Opening light is not a reason to lie. On the contrary: two half-lies make a wrong.

The contract based on the bidding up to that point suggests that partner has a good hand but not fantastic with good clubs but not a solid run of clubs and unlikely to have one and a quarter or more covers in spades Axx or better . Crap clubs and he should have bid 3NT which would fine to pass- you need to hope for AK of diamonds and a couple of hearts. Going for 3NT hopes for king onside insufficiently defended and spades even 4-4 break.

Well, what else would you like to play? Your reasoning for 4H is logical, but it sounds a little bit like taking a view.

In any case the light opener doesn't seem to be the problem here. Passing and having pard opening 1C would probably lead to a game being played.

I think 3N on the end of this auction is not automatic here.

Partner appears to have no spade stop and no club fit. So you probably have no running club suit and one spade stop. Partner seems to be 3541 or 2542. doesn't 4 seem to have more play than 3N a lot of the time ?

What's the worst that can happen ?

Qx, Qxxxx, AQxx, Qx ? and how likely is that compared to the sort of hand he actually holds ?

You deserve to catch xx, AKQxx, QJ10x, xx where 3N is no play and 4 demands nothing more than a 4-2 or better heart break.
