I opened 1H and GIB bid 1NT with 5 card spades:
KQxxx
Axx
JTx
Qx
Any comments? Is that standard for GIB or a bug?

"But I don't want to go among mad people," Alice remarked.
"Oh, you can't help that," said the Cat: "we're all mad here. I'm mad. You're mad."
"How do you know I'm mad?" said Alice.
"You must be," said the Cat, "or you wouldn't have come here."

It's possible when GIB-Partner holds hand which is invitational with 3rd♥ and border HCP/TP for GF to prefer 1NT ( which is 1R forcing ) and then on every rebid you do to express its hand with next bid, showing 1NT held invite with heart fit.
So in this case 4th or 5th spade could be suppressed.
But one little change to the holdings and the bidding will be different
♠KQxxx ♥Axx ♦QJx ♣xx and GIB will bid 1♠
So if the hand doesn't hide something so exciting then invite, could hide the spades under 1NT (it's not so dangerous, as GIB knows partner will definitely proceed ).
