Would you consider doubling here, or is it off the charts? If your answer depends on the form of scoring, please elaborate.

On what am I basing a double? The fact that the opps appear to have minimum values for game and I have AQ98x of hearts over the heart bidder? Both valid points, but not close to enough to double.

We do not know for sure that the opps are minimum for their actions. The opening bidder has not limited his hand too severly by the 1 rebid. We know that responder (declarer in 3NT) has game invitational values and that opener accepted. But opener could have extras.

What are you leading against 3NT? Surely not a heart. Opener appears to have no more than 4 clubs, possibly less, so partner rates to have some clubs. So, if you are doubling, a club lead makes some sense. So, too, might a spade lead, with 4 small.

I am not doubling 3NT. I am leading a club.

Even though LHO can have some extras, this looks like a x.

Oh, and I lead a heart.

edit - OK, I'd really like to be at the table for this one.

I'm concerned that their real source of tricks is in with rho having 4 and a bunch of those.

Positionally, that makes double a Hail Mary. I'm out but I'll lead a heart and hope for the best.

ps. I'll lead 5th best and hope for a lazy cover from Jxxx when pard (hopefully) returns one

If partner was on lead and I was over the hearts, double would have some merit, if I double now and lead a heart, I deserve opps to be 17 opposite 11, partner to have a stiff heart and opps to make 12 tricks.

double is insane. They could have 18 opp 11, and as someone mentioned you will get redoubled when LHO is very strong. You also don't have a great lead (I assume you'll lead a heart(?) but that could work out poorly if partner has a stiff or w/e).

Also, even though partners honors are behind LHOs in the pointed suits, we have length which is bad to go with no honors. It's not like we have short pointed suits as well, so that we can at least hope partner has tricks there with like KTxx, or KJ9x or whatever.

Also, their source of tricks might be clubs lol, and those will be onside. I spec X more than almost anyone and I think this one is very bad.

Justin beat me to the post: I can't imagine a spec double with this hand for the points made by him and, earlier, by Art

I thought about doubling, but didn't, and led a spade. The contract was down two. I was just curious if anyone else would be tempted enough to pull the trigger.

Amusingly, right after making this post I went to play and had Jxx KQT8xxx A xx r/r. 2N on my elft, 3S forcing 3N on my right, 3N on my left (2N 3N is artificial). I ripped it...pepsi on my left had AJxx of hearts and was smart enough to redouble knowing my hearts weren't running. -1400.

Now swap the A/4 and 95 and see how good that double is on a spade lead, 3Nxx+1, much too risky.

At the table you might double if you thought that the 3NT bidder thought for a while before bidding 3NT.
Please note: I am interested in boring, bog standard, 2/1.

I think North has a better chance of doubling, holding AQT in diamonds.

Also, he rates to not have a heart void when he leads the 3.

A cautionary tale. Wildest 24 board match I ever played, we won 75-73 after somebody doubled 3N off something more suitable than this, partner was sure I'd psyched but felt he really had to XX opposite my opening bid with his 16 count, I had a 9 count with a 6 card suit, I didn't find the obscure squeeze for the second overtrick and chalked up 1400 for 3Nxx+1.

Double makes more sense from north hand. A diamond lead for -3 or 4
