"But I don't want to go among mad people," Alice remarked.
"Oh, you can't help that," said the Cat: "we're all mad here. I'm mad. You're mad."
"How do you know I'm mad?" said Alice.
"You must be," said the Cat, "or you wouldn't have come here."

GIB overbids a lot, true. Are you sure that you are using advanced GIB or basic GIB?

The description provided for the 3 bid is essentially: 4+S and 15-22 total points; it appears to me that North actually holds 4 spades and 15 total points. So, are you saying that North doesn't have what he claims, or that the 3 bid should be defined differently than it is?

To me 3 spade should show 5 spade (therefore 6 club), and more total points. North has a clear pass, 3 spades is insane. If it had 5-6 and 15 HCP fine, but 15 "total points" including a bad K (which GIB doesn't know how to devalue), and 4324 is not remotely normal.

Couldn't North simply re-open with a double? And what would 2 show?

North should not reopen with double holding 3 heart and 2 diamonds. It would be OK with the red suits switched. But with 3h, the odds that partner had a trap pass go way down, the odds that the opps have a heart fit go down, the odds you have a fit go down, and the # of probable heart losers go up, all of which favor defending undoubled rather than declaring. Especially with the devalued HK although GIB doesn't correctly deal with wasted honors.

2 spades, should be some 5-6 or 4-6 in the blacks hand.
