LHO opens a Multi, partner overcalls 3♦, and RHO bids 3♥, pass-or-correct. What should double mean?

Maybe takeout-or-penalty? I realise that this can occasionally backfire.

After a Multi I play doubles of all their pass or correct bids as takeout. The reason: This is probably the last time that I can make this bid. If, on your auction, I would hold a nice takeout double of 3♠, it is most likely that opener's suit is spades and I will get another chance to show that hand type. And if opener's suit is hearts, I probably don't want to compete anyway.

In New Zealand use of the Multi is almost universal, so everyone has a horror story to tell. Here is one you may enjoy. Teams Red vs Red.
2♦ (3♥) X (XX)
I have a minimum weak 2 in ♠, of course. The X is pass or correct, I could bid 3♠ but partner knows what I have got after the XX and may be able to take 3♥ off in his hand alone, and my 3 high cards are all potentially defensive tricks.
LHO passes. Partner asks the meaning of the XX and is unhelpfully told 'no agreement'. Eventually he passes. 3♥XX makes = and we could have made 4 or 5♠.
Of course, partner has made an egregious error here ... or has he ... he has 6♠ and void ♥.

you make it sound like if passing a pass or correct double with the wrong hand was logical, but it was not.
