err 1016, database not available... anyone ever had this before? says wait a few and try again

When you login, the server authenticates you by talking to a database. If the database is down (ie, crashed, unavailable, corrupted, unreachable) the server cannot log you in and displays this message. Usually this means that someone is doing some maintenance on the database. If the message persists, there is a serious BBO problem.

We had a database problem that prevented people from logging in for about 10 minutes yesterday. We saw this message during the time it took us to detect and fix the problem. People who were already online were , by and large, unaffected.
