I forgot to mention this one earlier. This was the first hand of the night (was a pretty interesting series of boards).

Your call here?

edit: hand corrected

I would double, but it would be takeout-ish with some defense. Partner should realize we have some shape, as does RHO.

On a side note (and hoping not to get the thread off track or piss off OP), why do you think Man U is doing so poorly Wayne?

Probably lots of hearts and 4 clubs, distinguishing from 5 which would show at least 5

IMO Pass = 10, Double = 8, 5 = 7. Not confident -- because, for many pairs, there is an implication that partner's pass is forcing after we've constructively reached a vulnerable game. For some, there is even an agreement to that effect. If so, partner's pass shows willingness to compete further and, perhaps, we should go on.

Full hand below:

North at the table bid 5S. This ended up going -4 after the ace of hearts lead, crossing over in diamonds and playing a spade to the 8. 5H is -1 with careful defense.

Leading dia A is the tuff part of this careful defense, but can be found. Not sure if i would lead it without 4 NT bid, now i may though, still not sure tbh. Ducking the K or jumping the A on 7 is the easy part, once you got the lead right.

There is a mistake in the auction, surely South doubled 5?

No mistake on this hand, South did pass. The other tables result was 5HX-2.

That was a joke! (Making the point that South should double.)

Anyway, the most important part about about this auction is to know whether you play pass as forcing. If you do, then I think North's 5 bid becomes very reasonable (and South's pass becomes horrible). If you don't, then South's pass is probably not best, and neither is North's 5 bid.
