All vul at MPs, weak field.
I had a bit of a disagreement with partner over what the right call here is. What's your call?

I will try pass.

Expect most posters to bid something here to preempt/block/confuse opp.

If weak field I will out defend rather than try and steal or be destructive.

4H feels like too much and 2H feels like wrong and pass feels like wrong so I'll do something something

I'm bidding 4H.

In a sufficiently weak field, that's not optimal; you'd rather let the opponents play whatever contract and outplay the rest of the field.

However, in that weak a field, I'm not playing to win.

IMO 4 = 10, 3 = 9, 2 = 8, Pass = 7.

I don't find the argument for 4h convincing.

Not surprised to find posters do not pass.

Given that I have 4 spades I would just bid 3H

ya got it...just not sure what your logic is but ok....

I assume you say 3h wins much more often than pass, much more often

I expected these posts I expected that 3h AND 4H WOULD win poll and it does.
--------------------------

Again if your point is pass is losing bridge ok...but I do not see posters saying that and making a logic for that.
-----------------------

My one and only logic for pass is that pard will play me for less...for weakish.
the opp may missguess length in hearts

I bid 2 the extra trumps make up for the missing high cards and since I didn't bid 2 (which would show a good 2 raise) partner should not get excited.

Unfortunately you had 3 opponents on this deal so it probably wouldn't help (though I guess in this case pass wins :P):

And yes, partner really did overcall on Qxxx and then bid to the 5-level... He said that I really have to pass there, and one of the opponents suggested I should be playing with the most aggressive player in the club, so thought I'd check my own sanity. Defense dropped a trick so it was -800. I don't think anyone bid the slam (something went wrong when uploading the scores so can't check).

Weak game?!! You're not kidding! Any game with someone who can overcall 1 with your PD's hand and then sac 5 is an exceptionally weak game!

Your 3 bid is fine and it is enough vs weak opps. Your PD is criticizing you here? I'd run (not walk) but RUN from this PD!!

Wow, how to punish partner, overcall on Qxxx and then Sac Vul????

Also what Slam? I lead club 9 and as long as North covers and returns one you get a trump trick as well don't you??

Good point, though it can still be made double dummy (ruff high and then low spade to the 7 :P), down in practice though.

This violates the rules of the game. Partner is always world class and makes the best bid or at the very least a very reasonable bid. :)

To put it another way, the rules are we make the crucial bid, our WC hero partner will respond.

In any case I stick with my pass but expect the majority to bid some number of hearts.

3 from me, wouldn't really consider four, maybe if I had short spades. Partner doesn't really have anything that looks vaguely close to a 1 overcall, I'm not averse to the occasional 4-card overcall but Qxxx is just nuts. 5 is not from planet earth.

If your partner is criticising you on this hand it sounds like he has an attitude problem.

2H, 3H or 4H according to partnership style seems fine. I'd choose 3H.

Your partner is the epitome of Centre Hand Opponents. 1H is terrible enough, but 5H?! Seriously?

Given the overcall it is probably safe to say that 3 was taken as limit raise strength and not as preemptive. In that context it is less unreasonable to criticise 3, not that this excuses their own choices.
