Has anyone played this convention when leading an honor (from a sequence) where A = even, K = odd, Q = even, J = odd . . . etc.?

A sometimes partner (he lives in Vegas, I in LA) brought it up last week.

I've played Rusinow combined with Ace from an even number and King from an odd #. Partner signals count on how many tricks we are cashing in the suit (hi-low = 0-2; low-hi = 1-3)

Rusinow leads not the same as playing odd/even discards

odd/even for the most part refers to discards ..not opening leads...confusing

I am sorry if I confused you. To me Rusinow leads refers to the practice of leading the lowest of touching honors. The convention described by my sometimes partner was for opening leader to impart information about the length of his holding through the selection of the card led.

And obviously the question is what are the advantages (which I am quick to see) or (more importantly) the disadvantages of playing such a convention/system?

I think you meant the second top of touching honours? Partner needs to have some indication of where the top of your sequence ends.

I used to refer to these as Vinje. And it only applied v suit contracts, but yes, you would lead Ace from AK+even, and King from AK+odd. That in turn meant that from KQ you had to lead Q and from QJ the J and so on. Confusingly, Vinje recommended also leading the King from KQJ, and partner "should be able to work it out". There are some benefits but not convinced personally.

Anyhoo, on Ace or King lead partner's signal then indicated whether you were destined for an even number of tricks off the top or an odd number, assuming you continued the suit, and ignoring dummy's potential to ruff. There were certain dummy holdings that called for a change in signal.

I used to play it, with partners who were prepared to, and the system seemed OK. But I don't see it in popular use among good players, so I guess that it is not that great.

Masterminding (pron. mPosted ImagesPosted ImagetPosted Imager-mPosted ImagendPosted Imageing) tr. v. - Any bid made by bridge player with which partner disagrees.
