Call me primitive but I pass.

-5 card spades on the side is way too much for me to open 3.
-1 opening is not even a lead director.
-My hand perfectly fits in the definition of a pass.

I will bid 3, giving up on 4, since I can't see any sensible way to get there.

3c

Not much defense p is a passed hand and aiming for spades is a super small tiny window to worry about. It is all too easy for the opps to have game if not slam and at the very worst 3c is a decent lead director. Passing under these conditions is a head-in-the-sand philosophy:)

I open 3.

In third seat after 2 passes, my goal is to disrupt the opps as much as possible without sticking my neck out too far. 3 accomplishes this.

It is not my goal to find the best possible contract, but rather the best contract possible. Could we have a spade fit? Sure we could. But it is impractical to look for it.

I'm now thinking that given all the people voting for 3, I should probably have said 4. I have a reputation to uphold :)

I'm not supposed to have a side 4c-M when opening 3m but I'm in 3rd and 5432 are so tiny vs my AQJT876. Oops I messed up again with those black pips!

I rank
  • 3 = PRE. holding no bar to 3rd-seat pre-empt.
  • Pass = NAT. Gives opponents a lot of exploration room.

3C, with 1C also considered. 1C leaves options, and a HCP misdirection may be as effective as a preempt.

An ex-partner long ago tried 4S with this sort of a hand (mixing up a suggestion about what to do with a good 6 card major and weak 5 card minor). Easy +420.

Partner's a world champion now, so who am I to argue?

Spades are too weak to show, as lead in this suit is not what we'd like to got. I understand 3c, but if the opponents have unbalanced hands, it won't stop them from finding the game in hearts. That's why I would bid 1h.

1S. Why should a 3rd seat opening be lead directing? 3C is a really silly opening with 5S as well. Second choice is pass, but I like to get in here.

We knew that vote. Unfortunately, I am systemically barred from 4, so would have to settle for 3.

Really? I have an agreement with partner that a 3rd seat 1 opener that is revealed to be weak later in the auction is most often a strong lead indicator, otherwise why bother. You haven't impeded their bidding and with marginal standard openings and poor clubs we can choose a decent 4-card major. Works out most of the time.

I can't stand to pass at these colors or to miss spades at mp's so 1 for me.

I might make an exception to my 'bid one more than everyone else' rule for an aggressive Bermuda Bowl finalist :P

When it comes to 3rd seat preempts, the only rule is 'there are no rules.'. You can pretty much do whatever you want, so a theoretically questionable bid becomes desirable if you think it rates to grant a tactical advantage.

The example hand is certainly an odd one. In all honesty I think I would try 4 (IMPs or matchpoints). Counting losers this is 'ballpark'. I'll have another guess to make if the opponents get to 4 (how they get there affects my choice) but for now I'll try to buy (read: 'steal') it.
