The contract is 3NT and West leads the 7 to East's Q. Bridge Master suggests ducking this trick to cater to West holding K9876. Unfortunately, it doesn't explain why we should cater to this holding rather than West 876 - East KQ95. Maybe someone can help me out?

Heh. Indeed, if West is GIB he is rather more likely to be 876 than K9876 :)

I think standard leads in the US would have W lead the 8 from 876. True, he might have 765. I guess the main point is that beginners aren't taught to lead from 3 low that often.

@1eyedjack: and GIB leads the 6 as far as I know.

Well, Level 3 is hardly beginner level. I guess leading from 3 small was rare even at higher levels 20 years ago but I do believe it's becoming more popular.

Ah sorry misread the "A" as the level.

the idea is to hold the opps to 2 spades and 2 diamonds when the dia honors are split since going after diamonds is by far our best shot at 3n (heart finesse and 33 break echhhh). If rho has Qx and you win the first spade rho wins the first diamond and leads another spade won by lho with K9876 and they continue spades to clear the suit and they just wait until you lead another diamond to take 3s and 2d. If rho has KQ9x they can win at most 2 spades anyway so that is not a factor.

Well yes... UNLESS of course you duck the first spade trick and they continue with a small spade.

W might have found a lead from 7x, which seems like a slight argument in favour of ducking, depending on what the bidding was.

If it went 1 1 / 1N 3N or similar, it's surely better to play for the 4-3 split.
