I double, the difficult question is whether I pull 5♣ to 5♦.
Which actually gets back to the first question - what do you do? It may be a knee-jerk reaction to double, but is it the right thing to do? If you don't know that you are going to do over 5C, then should you double in the first place as it is certainly possible 4S makes? At the same time, bidding risks turning a plus into a minus while passing risks a double game swing or more likely missing a game against a small plus. I wouldn't be concerned about going for a number, but all bids, including double, have problems associated.

I double because a lot of the time partner passes, bids 4N (2 places)/5♦/5♥, and that is enough to make it worth doubling, I only have an issue if he bids 5♣.

After X followed by 5♣, wouldn't 5♦ show long diamonds with four hearts, pass or correct (what else could it mean)?

What do you do with 5-6, 5-7 or 6-5 ? are you bidding 4N with all of those ? also I think 4N (removing the option of passing) shows a bigger hand than double, so can you be 5-5 without enough for 4N, this sequence shows diamonds and hearts, but I don't think is guaranteed to be 4-?
