2NT is a catch-all. The hand isn't good enough for 3C and 2S promises 6.

2♥ = 4+ clubs
... - 2♠ = relay
2NT = 5+ clubs
... - 3♣ = relay
3♥ = 5215
... - 3NT

6NT is never really in the picture here with a misfit as Opener is essentially limited to 13.

If you open 1 Club, as I sometimes do with 5-5 in the black suits, then uninterrupted probably:

1 - 1
1 - 2 (FSF)
2 - 3 (no it's a real suit)
3NT- 4 (?)

But West might come in with 1S or some kind of two-suited overcall, in which case goodness knows where you finish up...

Could be worse, if south opens 1♣ and W bids a "spades and diamonds" 2♣, they're playing 2♠x.

After 3♦ South could give a heart preference of aim for 3NT. Both make sense but I persoanlly think I would bid 3NT

North knows not to try for slam with so many useless strength in the blacks in front.
