Few experienced pairs use penalty doubles here: negative doubles (which opener can leave in with suitable holdings) are generally viewed as more effective overall. However, here I am pleased that I have a penalty double available.
I have an easy lead of the heart queen. A trump lead would be second choice, to prevent declarer from eloping with small trump, but I doubt dummy has many entries and we probably have time to play trump sufficiently later in the hand. Meanwhile, the heart lead rarely costs a trick and will usually make the defence easy. I expect 500 if we can make 3N and 300 if we can’t (say overcaller has AKQxxx in spades, a rounded suit Ace, and we don’t have 9 quick winners). Expectations aren’t always attained, but bridg3 is a game of percentages, and I think the percentages are significantly more in favour of double than any other call.

Do you play penalty doubles ?
Although the OP has responded, I will say what she has not that this is from the last round of an Indy tourny (with an "Advanced" partner), so I strongly suspect there was actually no agreement on what a X would have been. It is also notably that the actual choice at the table was 3♣. Anyone want to make a case for that?

If you have agreed to play SAYC, then you know that X is penalty. OK, partner may not know that, but at least you will win the post-mortem
The world would be such a happy place, if only everyone played Acol :) --- TramTicket
