MP's, strict SAYC, Partner opens 1♦

I want to play slam or 3NT. In SAYC I have the choice between 3NT showing 16-17 HCP or 2♣. Is this the kind of hand to 3NT in SAYC with ?

2C. Not 3nt. Do I not have a minor game force raise in strict sayc?

No, no forcing minor raise. Blame the system but im trying to learn it.

You can bid 2♣ and hopefully get the chance to support clubs later on. Hopefully 1♦-2♣-2NT-3♦ is forcing but even if it is I'm not sure partner will know. Well, 1♦-2♣-(whatever)-4♦ then.

Helene, the problem with that last auction is that you bypass 3NT.

I would not risk 1D-2C-X-3D with anybody who doesn't play inverted minors, although I do think that it should be forcing.

If you play SAYC, bid 3NT with this hand. Not 2♣'s.

Lesson, don't might be not to play SAYC, but hey, it is matchpoints, so bidding 3NT is not so bad., Where do you want to play? 3NT. If parnter is unbalanced enough for 6D (or 7D) to have a shot, he will bid again.

theres always a flaw in any system, and minor suit bidding is almost a lost art.

Just the balanced 17 hcp is enough to want me to bid anything to play in either 3NT or 6D. If pard has a balanced hand (14 hcp max) then 3NT making 4 or 5 is about right. Finding out if pard is balanced is the key. 2C solves this problem and depending on his rebid and continuations (if any) you will get to the right spot.

SAYC was invented for use by patient (not inmates) people. Most get frustrated with it and just blast into where they are going for fear of getting dropped in a forcing auction when pard thinks that it was just invitational etc.
