You hold in 4th hand:
Scoring: IMP
in team match at favorable colors.

LHO and partner pass, RHO opens 1. You overcall 1, LHO bids 1. Partner jumps into the fray with 4, now 4 by RHO and it is back to you for yet another excruciating pass, pull, or double decision.

What do you do and why?

I've got two defensive tricks, and nothing remotely close to a 3rd trick. I expect 4's to show an offensive distributional hand without much defensive values. Can't see that we'll beat 4. At worst we go for -500 in 5's - partner's short suit is in spades.
Kind regards,
Harald

This doesn't seem excruciating to me. Pard has a weak hand with 5 diamonds and some shape. I expect the A in his wares, but thats it. 5 is probably 500, but maybe 300 on a good day, and thats what I will bid.

Maybe I'll hear a 5 call on my left, which we might be able to set.

agreed: this is a simple decision for me: partner said: do you want to save? And my answer is 'yes'.

Partners don't ask this question, opposite a one level overcall, with 2 defensive tricks.

OK, I will fold my tent quickly.

Now consider the followup:

You hold
Scoring: IMP
. RHO passes, you pass, LHO opens 1, partner overcalls 1. RHO bids 1 and it is back to you.

What is your bid and why?

2 because I've got good support for partner's suit.
... and I can prove it with my usual, flawless logic.

3D is enough, with both opps bidding I don't think we have game, I think we can make 3 but not sure about 4. I don't mind if the opps bid game, I like our chances of beating it.

Methods are nice to have here (2 as solid 2 raise, 2 more or less a noise, 2 limit raise, 3 flower (notwithstanding the 1 bid), 3 weak etc.

Assuming these (or some of them) are unavailable, and taking solace from my passed hand status, I bid 3 splinter, with 2 limit as my second choice.

This is a GOOD hand. Opposite a good overcall, say Axx Jxx KQxxx Kx, game is excellent.

This is a great hand. 2 is possible, but I like a 3 splinter.

2 is not enough. Either 2 or 3 seems OK.

Firstly I would have made a jump overcall of 2D with your hand. (1C) 1D takes away no space from the opps and really is a meaningless noise. What do you hope to achieve opposite a passed hand? Secondly having bid 1D, your partner should now find a 3S splinter. 4D is a poor bid, suggesting far more offence and nothing in defence.

Miraculously, I agree with everything The Hog is saying! 4 is pre-emptive with little defence; that hand is way too good.

I often agree with The Hog but to do this in this company is a unkonown feeling. Maybe this is the first timeever, that this happens.

I must disagree then :)

2 is probably best, but althou not stated, I suposed that system didn't allow us since many people plays it as majors.

Wasn't partner hoping to bounce them into 4S, when he bid 4D? X is clear.
