Did it really go the way you posted the auction?

South opened 1♣, and then did not raise N's 1♥ bid, looking at AQJx?

Assuming that you gave the auction correctly, it seems clear to play the encouraging 2. We are hoping partner has QJx (the x can be any card) and an early entry. Playing the A makes zero sense...altho any pair whose methods include that 1♠ rebid may have jumped to 3N with the stiff ♦K, I suppose <_< I'm not playing for North to be that silly, no matter what S has revealed about his level of ability so far.

IMO ♦2 = 10, ♦A = 4. (Agreeing with Mike & Hannie)
If partner has made a clever lead from ♦QJx then we should co-operate :)
If partner has 5 ♦ then we congratulate North on his successful bluff :) and apologize to partner :) :) :( :(

I'm also confused by the auction.
Not so much opening 1C without an opening bid, but not raising hearts at any point.

Anyway, playing the ace of diamonds is only right i) when declarer has singleton king or ii) when it's right to switch at trick 2. Any other card blocks the suit.

With no outside entry, the 2♦ seems obvious, doesn't it?

Turns out the opps screwy bidding allowed them to make 11, as pard lead Q from QJTxx and declarer had the stiff K. Rising with the ace (teh wrong play in general) sets them 2.

Defender apologized for not rising with the ace, but later said doing so probably wasn't a good play in general. My thought is why apologize for any play unless its obviously a real mistake? If you make an informed guess and it turns out wrong, so what? Why apologize?
