Sorry, 1 and this isn't an LOL.

- The NT will obviously want to be played from partner's side.

- Unless you are overbidding 1N - 2 - 2 - 2N - 3 or 1N - 2 - 2 - 2N - 3, you aren't ever finding a 5-3 spade fit.

Only with a weaker partner in a weak game would I open 1N.

Edit: How do you play 1S 1N : 2C 2S : 2N?

If you open 1S (which is fine obv) you have to pass 2S in this auction with 15 in my strong opinion. You might miss some 15 opp 9 or 15 opp 10 games that way, but in general bidding 2N will just get you too high.

Playing some form of bart as many do would solve this (where partner can show a "bad" 2S bid or a "good" 2S bid).

Sure, just like we will miss some 4 games with 15 + 7-8 + a fit when we open 1N.

1NT first/second, 1 third, not sure about 4th, probably depends on mood/opps.
p.s. 1st/2nd is a wtp for me

Alert, style poll, no minds to be changed!

I'm at least interested what is the style of other people. I'm even open to change my personal style based on commens here. :)

But for me opening bid with this hand depends a lot more on the system details and partners option.

A matter of style and system - I don't mind either on this hand. 1NT will get you to those 15 opp 9 games in which 1 will not, but 1 may get you to those 4card support with a shortage games in which 1NT will not (or maybe 4 will be better if system doesn't permit the location of the 5-3 spade fit). 1 will also get you to (most likely) better partials such as a spade contract or possibly even clubs or diamonds when it goes 1-1NT-2-P/2 (hearts will break even). Of course you will have more advantage if you play a gadget over 1-1NT like bart or gazzilli.

That's the easy bit:

2 over 1NT
2NT over 2x, or eventually 3NT if that's the system bid.

Worse is if it goes

1 1NT
2 2
??

Perhaps 2NT now. Not ideal, but liveable. I prefer opening 1NT the first place, though.

I have a hunch what Justin meant by "you need to pass 2" even though partner could have 9 opp your 15 was that partner could also have a 4 count and 3 spades.

2N could be right, but it could be very wrong too.

1 but 1 NT is fine too. And surely I will pass 2 after my 2 rebid.
Kind Regards

I prefer 1, but if you open 1NT with 15-17 and 5 card Majors, then open 1NT WTP?

That is correct. If pard does have the flattish 3-card raise, I'll go down in 2NT/3. The (obvious) point is that you'll score a couple when pard has an half-decent hand.

Partner spades are ours -> 1S
If 1N how 5-3s fit found?
That's at least as big a problem as rebid after 1S.
A problem precisely because all bal 15-17 open 1NT,
THEREFORE DESIGNED ON PURPOSE TO LEAVE NO REBID AFTER !M bal 15-17. WHY?!
