IMPs across the (intermediate) field.
We as N/S didn't really get into heated arguments and mostly blamed West's gutsy (!) overcall. Would you have done anything differently?

Well I'd double 4 but we're not getting desperately rich out of that, the problem is that visualising the spade void in the south hand holding only 2 yourself isn't easy, and there must be a danger partner has two small spades and a club loser.

As for South, if you open 4 with >50% of your HCP outside of your suit, you can be sure that sometimes your partner will misjudge the auction. I might open 4 anyway but that's the risk you take.

As for North, there are many hands that will make 5 (AK-8th and out, virtually any singleton spade) and many hands where the opponents are making 4. Give West one more and one less and both contracts are making.

At IMPS, bidding on is right if either contract is making .. and you really don't want to risk a double game swing if both contracts are making .. so I give most of the blame to North.
If no one comes from the future to stop you from doing it then how bad a decision could it really be?

North's pass was a crime. Either 5 or double is acceptable.

I don't think opening 4 is wrong. Passing 4 however is nuts. Both Dbl and 5 would be ok imo.
