Bidding: 1D-1H-2NT-5NT-6NT. Low heart lead.

You mist the great grand slams, but since you are playing matchpoints, you still want to make 7. What is the best line?
Please note: I am interested in boring, bog standard, 2/1.

What was the opening lead?

IF diamonds don;t split 3-3, you have all kind of squeeze chances. For instance, a show up squeeze in case Rho has doubleton club Queen, for instance a dobule squeeze with threat diamond against one, club against the other, spade aqainst both. (assuming 5 heart tricks of course).

The lead is a low heart.

Hearts split 4-1 (west has 4), everybody follows to first two rounds of diamonds.

Seems like triple squeeze against East, or Double squeeze... Cash your 3 top s and you'll see what's it gonna be :D

A good hand for determing level of play.

A novice and an expert would just liead out their high cards (more on expert in a bit)

A beginner would take the club finessee, finessee being a play they all have mastered

An intermdieate would test diamonds first, then take the club finessed

An advanced player would see the potential for a diamond-club simple squeeze, he would cash two spades, then run hearts. If the same hand had four diamonds and the club queen he would be squeezed. In the end, cash diamonds and if the last diamond wasn't good, then start clubs from the top (back more or less tte novice line, except the novice wouldn't notice that the last diamond was good or not).

An expert woudl see that not only is clubs a threat suit, bus so too is spades. He would begin with three rounds of diamonds to determine who had four diamonds. If it was EAST, he would claim. If it was west, he would have to explore some more.

If EAST has 4D, the expert would realize this is a simple or double squeeze played as a compound squeeze (you could exchange club jack for the club two, same play will work). Let;s see the basic endings... you run hearts and EAST has to come to keep one diamond Here is one hypothetical ending (note I removed the club jack).

On the heart ACE, EAST has to give up his stopper in clubs or spades, south throws a spade. Then on the last heart, east has to throw another card from the same suit. So it is easy to read which suit EAST gave up. If it was clubs, cash two clubs to force him to give up has spade stopper. Ir it was a spade, play spade ace and a spade. Note. on the last heart, WEST had to abandoned whatever black suit EAST kept. The technical name for this is a compound squeeze. Since only one opponent can hold the club queen, it is never really a compound squeeze, but you can play it as one....

If on the otherhand, WEST had four four diamonds, South will 1) know he needs never take the club hook (if WEST has the club queen, he can be squeezed down to showing it.. a so-called show up squeeze). But if EAST has the club queen then no squeeze works (as longe as EAST doesn't also have five spades or mmore). So when WEST shows up with four diamonds, run hearts (throw a spade and club), cash Spade King and cross to the SPADE ACe.. is the diaamond good? If no, the play club AK.. just like the novice did (cash winners). If WEST had the club Queen, if will fall.. three card ending would be (West has to keep the damond, so he has to come down to two clubs)..

The failing case is when EAST has the club queen and west has at least three spades... West throws all his clubs away, and keeps his spades and diamond, and EAST keeps three clubs to the Queen. Then you make 12 tricks like everyone else.
