Most Souths bid 4 over 2NT, got doubled and played there, so in that auction and this one EW never bid their 10-card master suit...

GIB currently wants a twice rebiddable suit before it will show it instead of 2NT. It will only show a rebiddable suit immediately if it doesn't have a diamond stopper.

I take it you think we should reduce that requirement, and always bid a rebiddable suit? Or maybe it should make a negative double (as it would with an even worse suit and no stoppers), since it can always bid NT later if partner doesn't show a fit.

It seems like the bot takes the concept of "bidability" a bit far by describing J9xxxx as "3-".

We should just take out the part of that rule that says it shows 3- in the majors. I think it came from an assumption that it would always make a negative double with a 4-card major, but the 2NT bid is taking precedence.

One thing you should know is that in the bidding database, the requirements for a bid are expressed separately from what the bid "shows". This is necessary for a variety of reasons (consider Stayman -- it doesn't show anything specific).

This sounds like a question of modern bidding style, which I'm not equipped to answer. I'd rather know about partner's J9xxx, never mind J9xxxx, since he can still bid NT if I don't have a fit...
