Looks like a glitch between rebidding 1NT and 2.

It will be investigated for fix.

Would you want to open then rebid (maybe a couple of times)?

Having 6th minor GIB will ignore 5th major in opening and will open 1/.

Just longer suit wins when selecting.

Yes, clearly that is what GIB does. My question was to ask whether folks think this is a good idea.

If we do that, we need to come up with a precise specification of when it's appropriate. Should we base it on the quality of the suits (so that Jxxxx AKQxxx is opened 1), or do it any time we're not strong enough to reverse (keeping in mind that you don't need as strong a hand to reverse with 6-5)?

I'd prefer the latter, but I deliberately made my posts as questions because I certainly don't know whether that would be a majority opinion.

When I pick up a hand like that, I'm certainly tempted to open 1. I'm not sure whether I'd do it, though. It might also depend on whether partner is a passed hand; if I'm in 3rd seat it's more likely we'll end up on defense, and if he's on lead I'd certainly prefer a lead than .

Either would be a clear improvement. To help your staff pick one: http://www.bridgebas...age__mode__show

BTW, GIB doesn't always rebid 1NT with this shape. It will rebid 2D if the suit quality is better (twice rebiddable).

I think suit quality is not as important as shape. Therefore, if a bid shows the right shape but wrong suit quality, the other bid shows a right suit quality but wrong shape, one should choose the right shape.

My suspicion is that the rule was matchpoint-oriented. It will rebid a rebiddable major, but requires twice rebiddable minor.

I don't think it's possible to make rules take form of scoring into consideration explicitly in the bidding rules, but simulations do. However, I believe the rule being used for this bidding sequence disables simulations.

There should almost never be simulations at the 1- or 2-level. At that stage of the auction we should still be trying to have an honest exchange of information with partner, which generally means following rules.

And in fact, I believe most of the early rules have simulations disallowed.
