Takeout X is up to 4H
what's the call?? The reason for your call and the expectation for your partner's hand to support your decision.

IMP or MP make any differences?

I'm not going to fall in love with my hand here. I have a LOT of losers, especially if opener doesn't have the A, which always seems to show up in dummy on these auctions...

Failure to double here is masterminding to the nth degree.

I double.

MP, IMPs, doesn't matter which.

What does partner have to support my action? I don't particularly like the way the question was phrased. My action is based on the cards in my hand. Partner had to have enough money to pay his entry fee. As for his hand, 13 cards would be a good start. I hope that they are distributed between the suits and the ranks so that whatever action he takes over my double will be successful.

I think mindless doubling here is kinda bad, to be honest. This is frequently a hand where nobody makes 10 tricks anywhere, and I'd much rather be plus than minus. Given my hand, which I don't think has offensive strength commiserate with it's HCP, and given that partner passed over 3, I think it's actually a fairly small range where doubling wins. If playing very old fashioned agreements, with takeout doubles only through 3 or something, I'd feel better about doubling.

X -- at that vul. they are probably just toying around with us, and we might well go for -800 or worse, but passing seems too conservative and likely to cost a lot as well.

Great he made a completely normal double. Is this thread real?

Just because something is "normal" (and in this case I don't really agree), don't mean it's right.

Double. While I probably have an effective 14 count here (which I'd double with anyway), we cannot afford to miss a vul game.

I agreed with his double, but I was asking myself where the line is. I don't know but I'm asking. Would you draw the line anywhere here? Less?

#1 is an auto X to me, after that it is less clear, the line is somewhere in there. I would definitely X 2 also though.

The question strongly suggests that there is another part to this thread -- ie partner went into the tank before passing or similar.

For most of us, X is an easy pick.
We all expect pd to bid whatever 4 card major and make a game? There are probably around 15 points shared by West and North. Please analyze several possibility of pd's hand and expect the result according your choice.

Yes, hopefully partner will bid a 4+-cd major and make game. Why do you want us to invent hands for partner and then offer a result? That sounds like work and won't prove anything at all.

I think it does prove that X here isn't near as good or automatic.

Interesting that we had this discussion 3 days ago in a house game (teammatch) here. Pd did not double the same auction ( their suit was clubs this time) with AQxx KTxx AJx xx. They played it. I, who passed over 3 had xxxxxx Ax QTxx x. And i also failed to balance 4 with this.

NS red EWwhite

Pd said he wanted to have a plus score, and that we were red and it was dangerous, and he continued with hcp predictions saying that we were unlikely to make game. Indeed we had a plus score at our table, it was not a mighty plus as other NS had at their table but...i said "***** happens, next board"

At other table, East prefered to remain silent over his pd's 3. I guess he also wanted to get a plus score, i dunno. Speech = silver/silence = gold phrase didn't work out very well at this board for us :)

I think people sometimes ignore the fact that, a pd who passed over a preempt can have some really shapely hands and could not act over a preempt as light as he can over a 1 level opening.

"Well to be perfectly honest, in my humble opinion, of course without offending anyone who thinks differently from my point of view, but also by looking into this matter in a different perspective and without being condemning of one's view's and by trying to make it objectified, and by considering each and every one's valid opinion, I honestly believe that I completely forgot what I was going to say."
