I would bid 4NT over 4. You need next to nothing to make 11 tricks in a red suit - some length in a red suit and one, maybe two, red suit honors (assuming partner does not have an ace.

Slam is not out of the question. Even a grand slam is not out of the question - on the best of all days, partner could have Ax x xxxxx Axxxx.

This is not to say that bidding is always right on these cards, but I think it is right more often than not.

yes 4 Nt followed by 5 over the possible 5 from partner. This is not risk free, but surely the winning auction in the long run.

Yep. Pard can't just assume minors, so has to respond 5 with xxx x Jxxxx Kxxx in case we have clubs and hearts.

ok that's a useful one thanks guys, had thought 4NT would show the minors... hence i plumped for 5H... what should've been a bottom turned into a top though when nutter east decided to bid 5S (dbl-3) when 5H was going 2 off lol
