Relay Asker

3 - 4

I think that RR needs to see 9 slam points to try for game in NT with this misfit

This appears to be a different hand 7 than the other thread. Might want to change the title.

3-4 QP, 8
4-4 1-2 diamonds, no club (can't stop in 4N, might as well ask)
4N-5 exactly 1 spade, 2 diamonds (so given hand, or K and A/KQ)
5N -P

A lot better with the K or J than without.

... 3 (shape)
3 - 4 (8 QP)

Jxx K AKxxx Qxxx is pretty cold, so it's worth at least asking.

4 - 4 (must be two top diamonds)

We need club queen here to have much play (there is a sure side loser and we need clubs as a trick source). If we relay with 4, partner will bid past 4NT only with club queen. That would be a hand like the above, or Axx x AQxxx Qxxx (which actually offers decent play for 6 on a dummy reversal). Probably worth a shot:

4 - 4NT (no top club)

This must be Axx x AKxxx xxxx (the actual hand) which is a poor slam, so we pass and play 4NT.

3 - 4 (QP? - 8QP)

There seems to be very few hands where slam is good (I think Adam's construction is missing DJ - Jxx K AKxxx Qxxx is only 11 tricks unless HJ falls, which is 36% of the time, with DJ it becomes 68%), or Axx K KQJTx xxxx (pretty much cold as long as D comes in), or Axx J AKJxx xxxx (D finesse or CQ doubleton) - I won't find the latter since I could not differentiate between this and Axx K Axxxx xxxx. Makes me wonder whether I should have used a different method.

On the actual hand:

4 - 4NT (control parity - odd, odd KQJ in , even in )
Pass

I will be worse placed than regular PCB if responder has Axx K Axxxx xxxx, since I will have to play 5NT.

Bottom line is we never let that difference of opinion interfere with anything."

...-3 (shape)
3-3NT (puppet ; 6-8 QP's)
pass (not enough for slam imo)

Imo Relay Asker should bid 3NT instead of asking for QP's because you need RR to zoom for slam. This gives you 2 advantages:
- when RR has 8 QP's you can play a safer 3NT instead of 4NT (no difference for 6 or 7 QP's)
- when RR has 9 QP's or more, you're 1 step lower for your scan

What are the rules for responder to zoom on over the terminator? Seems like in this case, responder should bid 4 with 8 QPs (base 5 + 3)?
