Tough question. You were basically forced to re-open the first time so your X didn't show any extras. And your hand is a full ace above minimum. On the other hand, partner had a chance to bid twice and didn't. He might still have 5 small hearts and short spade so you make 3♥ and they make 3♦, but you can also turn +100 into -200 easily. With a singleton diamond I would probably double one more time, but with 2 small I think I'll pass and defend.

IMPS and MP are very different games at MP x here is a reasonable move since

it goes for a top when p can pass at a small risk since letting the opps play 2d will

most likely result in a very poor mp score anyway.

At IMPS however the risk factor is significantly different since we would likely lose only a small

number if imps if we let the opps play 2d. x here goes for the relatively small number of hands

p is sitting on a penalty pass. The risk however is significant since p will have a hand that has to

bid 3c a lot more often than they have a penalty pass.3c rates to be a cruddy contract the vast

majority of the time and we will get x about as often as p could pass 2dx for penalty. The risk

vs reward for x seems too large (though hardly deplorable). These conditions seem to call for

2h

as a balancing bid rather than x. There is little downside since p will now have a very good

description of our hand and better yet we might manage to get to some otherwise unbiddable

heart games. If p had a penalty pass we still have 3n available as a game bid and while we may

miss out on a big penalty once in a while it is better to save our balancing x for hands with better

overall distribution if p cannot pass for penalty.

Smooth pass, I think it's a pretty clear long term winner. 3♦ will often go down one or two, while we could be heading for an adventure, if partner has to scramble on a weak hand.

Saying we should have bid 2♥ before to cater to hearts is resulting, double was obvious, partner might have been able to make a penalty pass and we do have a takeout hand.

Thanks for the responses, I chose to pass, but couldn't help but feel double may have been better. Full hands below (pips have changed since I wasn't looking at hand records when I posted it).

If I remember right, 3D-1 was worth about 60% of the MPs, double would have been 80% if pulled to 3H, or 95% if left in.

Pass. You've done your job and pushed them up a level.

A further Double pushes your side into a 3 level contract of uncertain desirability. There's a good chance for the matchpoint kiss of death --down 1 doubled vulnerable - 200. Partner had a chance to compete over 3 ♦ and didn't.
