http://tinyurl.com/l636l9z - last board from a 15-bd tourney; I was challenged by pd's 5NT and took it as "Grand Slam Force" expecting implied fit in hearts, and replied accordingly (moreover, current standings allowed me for a "Va banque" bid). From partner's prospective - he might have questioned my holdings in diamonds, however 1D followed by 2NT is still 4+ cards with 18-19 hcp, imho.
On the other hand, looking afterwards up in data banks I came upon another 5NT convention - "Pick a Small Slam".
How would you approach both hands, please?

Pick-a-slam is more usual, but it seems a strange bid from East, since the 2NT rebid should have denied 4-card H support. Although if it is pairs, the Moysian amusingly makes and scores better. Not as well as 6NT, which needs the same heart finesse and diamond break but doesn't need hearts 33.
Anyway there seems to be a lot of room between 3♥ and 5NT, and I don't see why it had to be used up in one bid. So I'm not quite sure what I would do, but I know it is not that.

I don't believe that you can construct a hand consistent with the auction on which partner will be able to demand a grand slam if you have the AK of hearts. He does not know that you have the diamond ace, and he implied some length in diamonds.
Pick a slam might have been his intention, but it is misguided. With 2344 distribution and 14 HCP, he could make the perfectly normal 4NT call over 2NT, asking partner to bid 6NT with a maximum for his bid and pass otherwise. 6NT would be reached, and that is a perfectly reasonable contract. Moreover, if opener wants to suggest playing in another suit over 4NT, he could bid it naturally. But responder might be confused into thinking that opener was responding to Blackwood.

Also partner could have found out about the heart tops by bidding 4NT over 3♥, which I think is RKCB now.
