EW vul. Opps are weak-to-intermediate-level players. Scoring is cross-IMPs. System is weak NT with 5cM, 1C is essentially clubs or 15-19 BAL with 1D transfer Walsh.

This went for 990, with 5C being cheap. ATB?

blame mostly north....

north has so little defense might open 3c rather than 1c.

If your system allows very weak minor suit opening bids, then south should pass 4S. In the KS style (which I prefer), the explanation would be "1C is essentially clubs with good values or 15+ BAL" Then the blame on the opening bid is obvious.

It can easily be right, KJx, Axxxx, Q10xx, x looks like a double where 4 and 5 are both off possibly by a distance. Looks like a case where S doubled expecting a pull on N's sort of hand, N didn't expect S to X on what he had.

ALL systems have weaknesses. If the 1c opening bid is within tolerance of your system than your partnership has to make a decision. Let these kinds of hands go Or double as south did and pull with trickless wonder Or have more defense if south before applying the hammer. It is no different than deciding to invite game and finding p with a rock bottom minimum and going down. The main problem with these type of competitive hands is that when the decision to x is wrong it can be quite a swing. There is no blame to be assigned here aside from system since it appears both players made reasonable decisions within the confines of their agreed system.
If it were up to me I would pull to 5c at these colors since the expected size of the penalty 4sx is probably small anyway and the likely penalty for 5cx is likely not that huge if p can x the opps. Decide how your partnership wishes to proceed and accept the bad along with the good:)

The problem ofr N is, what is dble, the problem for S is how do I compete, double is clearly the answer to S's problem they do hold 2 defensive values. What other action should S take that can be better than double? This dble can not possibly be a trump stack.

N opened a hand that is clearly sub minimum with at most 1 1/2 defensive tricks and may bring ZERO tricks defenively to this party. The option now is do I pass and pray, or bid and pray, surely option 2 offers the best hope of reaching the promissed land.
