1. 1 ♠ (2 ♣) ?
Available in your arsenal is
1. 2S (usually 3 pieces)
2. 3S (preemptive)
3. 2N (mixed raise - implies a little defense)
4. 4S (more preemptive)
Make your choice, but you can anticipate the next call which is 5♣ from LHO.
2. Your call over 5 ♣?

Then I guess the answer to question 2 derives from the fine (but not 100% explicit to us) gradation you make between the different raises. And if a pass from partner is forcing (after 2NT?). But anyway, I'd still be tempted to bid 5 as I have a bit more than expected, while 5C can only be -1 or even make on a very stormy day.

I've been wrong before.

- 2N = MIX. Then pass 5♣. The 2♣ damage can't be undone.
- 4♠ = PRE. The best bid if RHO had passed. Then Pass 5♣.
- Pass = DOG walk. Then bid 3♠ and 4♠.
- 2♠ = NAT, But, again, keep bidding to 4 level.
- 3♠ = NAT. Then 4♠

5s - having shown some values already i'm much happier bidding on with my extra shape. if i had the ace of d unshown i'd be worried that i was phantoming

This matched my thoughts, trusting partner to hammer 5C along the way.
Alas, 5S was a phantom across from AQJxx Axx Qxxx x.
Kinda thinking CHO owes me a x with this once I show a little D.

Using the system as described. 2N gets us another chance to bid and we cannot afford to not be in game. The dia A makes this a hard hand to preempt in case the opps bid 5c. We do not have the values to show p a ton of stuff but we would like to see an x if perchance the opps continue to bid above 4s (either immediately or later). If p cannot do anything over 5c should we go to 5s? I am not sure. First we might not even beat 6c and there is no guarantee 5s will be a great sac (ie -300 or -500 are plausible).

Because I didn't want partner to take a phantom and x 5C knowing I have defense.
