Hello! I (obviously) misinterpreted my partners double. Ops diamond bid was alerted as meaning hearts. We play systems on with NT over interference.

I viewed the double as either a negative double with 4 spades or transfer to spades with 5. It could not mean a stolen bid with transfer to hearts with ops bid.

How should I have interpreted it? Best regards.

Mike

Double of a conventional bid showing the suit is pretty common

X of a suit is usually penalty or takeout by agreement, but in this case I would treat it as negative, but not GF given the transfer. You can double hearts after transfer completion. If I want to show then either via 2N to show weak or via 3 otherwise.

There is a case for having the double as wanting to penalise a heart contract, since bidding 2 could be used as a takeout double-type hand with short hearts and Lebensohl can be used to compete in 3m. The problem with waiting for the auction to come round again before making a takeout double is it may come round to you at the three level.

You can wait for a penalty X, if it gets raised in the meantime then even better. 2 as takeout is good
