Matchpoints. Some spots might have been wrong but the relevant ones are correct.

Partner leads the 3, to the J, Q, and A.

Declarer cashes AK, then leads a heart to partner's Q. (Partner also had J if it matters.)

Declarer is not an expert.

What do you signal?

If it matters you're playing UDCA, but there's probably something reasonably equivalent no matter what you're playing.

(I was West. East tanked. We ended up getting it wrong (possibly my fault) in a way that only good players could but still got a top.)

West (your partner) leads the 3 as the opening lead.

I'm a little confused by the bidding. If West has QJxx in hearts, then South opened 1 with AKxx, his partner raised with three cards, and then South bid them again?

But to answer your question, I guess I would discard the 8, to discourage diamonds and suggest a spade lead. If I do get that lead, I'm not 100% sure what I would play next. I guess a club? Opener might have had a stiff A but if he has to trump in, that's OK.

But defense is probably the weakest part of a weak overall game for me. :)

Partner has only QJx, opener has AKTxx. OP just mentioned that partner *had* the J, not that he was going to get it as a trick, so that you can count the hand.

I will absolutely agree it wasn't clear and took me two readings (but as I was thinking 123Stop and oh, can't be, partner's got 3, it was easier for me to get "only 5").

You're right - I misread it. Thanks!

Fwiw 8D playing udca asking for the "Obvious Shift". In this example Spades are the "Obvious Shift". If partner leads a low spade I will win and return a Spade.
